Champions League Review: Stalemate in Europe

The Champions league round of 16 resumed last night when Bayern Munich faced Liverpool at Anfield while Lyon hosted Barcelona. The two games while scintillating ended in goalless draws. Here is our review of events;

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich

Liverpool have everything to play for when they return to Germany for the second leg of their last 16 tie with Bayern Munich after a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Liverpool posed the greater threat throughout the game but the Bavarians marshalled a disciplined defence to keep the hosts out.

Sadio Mane spurned a handful of first-half chances, while Joel Matip also failed to convert Roberto Firmino’s cross from six yards out.

Matip’s misdirected clearance almost gave Bayern an away goal but the ball rebounded to safety off Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

The Bavarians were excellent defensively and Sadio Mane’s 85th minute header was the closest Liverpool came to scoring on a night when chances were few and far between.

There is everything to play for when both teams take to the Allianz Arena on the 13th of March for the second leg and it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top.

Lyon vs Barcelona

Barcelona went home empty handed despite having 25 shots against a resolute Lyon side at the Groupama Stadium in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg tie.

Lyon goalkeeper, Anthony Lopes was the hero of the night at the Groupama stadium denying Barca’s Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Phillipe Coutinho in front of goal to keep his team in the Champions League Round of 16 tie.

At the other end of the pitch, Marc-Andre ter Stegen tipped Martin Terrier’s long range shot onto the bar to deny Lyon a goal advantage going into the second leg at the Camp Nou.

In a game dominated by the Catalans, they were unable to secure a breakthrough despite their 25 shots and they go into the second leg without a distinct advantage over their French rivals. Nevertheless, the Spanish champions are still the favourites to win the tie and progress to the Quarter Finals.

The second leg takes place on the 13th of March at the Camp Nou.
