The lion heart movie was released in December 2018 and was definitely one of the most talked about movie of the moment and another reason why it ‘trended’ was Netflix buying the worldwide rights on this movie.
The movie which gives an insight into the family of the Obiagus, a successful Enugu based family running one of the biggest road transport companies in country. The company falls into debt and Adaeze (Genevieve Nnaji) and her uncle have to come together to look for ways in order for the company to come out of debts and get the company back together.
We loved that this family took their company and the workers as family, and doing anything that would jeopardize their future was unacceptable (this definitely portrayed the Igbo entrepreneurial culture).
The choice of location and cast were absolutely amazing. We also loved the fact that Nkem Owoh’s role was switched. It was one of those movies where he wasn’t the comedian and the role gave him a blend of personalities. Music selection was great as the song choices reminded us of those Nollywood movies we watched growing up.
The movie took us back to the east and gave us a peep into culture. The video quality was centered on a sepia theme. The story line was great but coming from the “hype” surrounding the movie, we felt that it was too straight forward and a bit of a stretch from reality. It was not suspense filled as we all knew the end from the ‘middle’.
The use of native languages without infusing English-sounding accents brought this movie very close to perfection for us but the lack of thrill was a bit of a bummer. Regardless, Genevieve made us proud (as is apparent from how we’ve been all over her this week, lol).
Despite the shortfalls, Lionheart was actually worth the watch so be sure to check it out on Netflix or a cinema showing it near you!
