Our MCM for the Week is Johnny Drille
John Ighodaro is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was born on the 5th of July, 1990 in Edo state, Nigeria
He attended the University of Benin, Benin City, where he studied English and Literature.
Johnny’s interest in music started in his father’s church at an early age where he learnt to sing.
Johnny participated in MTN Project Fame in 2013 and was evicted at the tenth position.
He came into the spotlight when he released a cover of ‘Awww’ by Di’Ja and got recognised by the C.E.O of The Mavin Records – Don Jazzy who followed him on Twitter to commend him.
He revealed that he had tried his hands at multiple genres of music including ‘Highlife’ and Hip Hop hip hop but didn’t work out for him until he figured out a way to stand out when he came across the music of the American folk band, “Mumford & Sons.”
According to him, he looks up to Musicians like: Mumford & Sons, Owl city, Phillips, Passenger, Jon Bellion, Laura Muula and the Nigerian sensation, Cobhams Asuquo.
Johnny Drille has a folk song about love titled “My Beautiful Love” as well as a collaboration with Nigerian Afro-house musician Niniola titled “Start All Over”, Romeo & Juliet”, “Halleluya” featuring Simi, “Awa Love”
In 2015, Johnny Drille was nominated for the Best Producer Award at the South South Music Award (SSMA).
Also, In 2016, he was nominated for the best Alternative Song award at the Headies.
On 28th of February 2017, Mavin Records made an announcement that Johnny Drille had officially signed a contract with the label.
He released two new singles on the 1st of February, 2019 – Shine and Forever which was on the Apple’s Music ‘Best of the Week’ and ‘Future Hits’ Playlists
