Overcoming Addiction

An addiction is a condition that is caused by compulsive use of substance regardless of the harmful consequence. This comes in different forms like, alcohol, food, game, social media, pornography, gambling, shopping, sex addiction and many others.

People with addictions generally have an intense focus on doing a particular thing or using a certain substance based on what it is they are addicted to, to the point that it takes over their life.

When it comes to addiction, the will to do whatever one is addicted, overcomes common reasoning. When it comes to overcoming addiction, the first step is admitting that your fixation is a problem and you need help.

Here are few basic tips on how to overcome addiction:

  • Decide to quit:

Take the big bold step to end your addiction. Address how you became addicted at first. Think about your physical health, ask yourself if you are at risk of getting disease as a result of your addiction.

  • Take responsibility:

Stop shifting blames for your decisions and accept the consequences of your actions. Also, stop trying to explain or justify why your addiction is worth holding to. Instead, accept your personal responsibility for the decisions and actions that led you to the situation.

  • Make an end-game plan

Don’t go too hard on yourself. Set a feasible date to quit and plan towards it and ensure to take medical support if you can because some addictions can be life threatening if stopped suddenly.

  • Identify your triggers

Everyone has a trigger that makes them want to indulge in certain bad habits. Knowing your triggers will help you to avoid them and if unavoidable, help you face them when you want quit.

  • Keep yourself busy

An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Always find something to do like writing, exercising or just use the opportunity catch up on your hobbies.

  • Avoid your triggers

That group of friends or spot that makes you want to indulge in your bad habits, try your possible best to stay clear of them until you are strong enough to hold up against them.

The journey to overcoming addiction is only as successful as the strength and willpower you dedicate into it. Addictions can be defeated, just be willing to work for it.
